Who We Are and Who This Is For
Nightpress is an AI novel-writing service operated in the United States. During the closed beta the service is offered only to adults (18+) residing in the United States and is not directed at persons in the European Union, European Economic Area, or United Kingdom. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18; if you believe a minor has an account, contact us and we will delete it.
What We Collect
- Account basics — your email address and, if you sign in with Google or GitHub, the display name and avatar those providers share with us. If you sign in with an emailed link, we store only your email address. We never see a password.
- Book content — story premises, plans, chapters, reviews, covers, and metadata for the books you create.
- API keys — the Anthropic API key you add is encrypted at rest and used only to run your own pipeline jobs. Only a short hint (the last characters) is ever displayed back to you.
- Usage records — per-call token counts and cost figures for your runs, so we can show you spend summaries and enforce your cost limits.
- Share link activity — for books you share by link, anonymous reader counts, how far into the book readers got, and clicks on your store link. For "anyone with the link" links we never record names or email addresses; a reader's browser keeps a random id so we can count them once.
- Acceptance records — the time you accepted these policies and confirmed you are 18+ and a U.S. resident.
- Technical logs — standard server and edge logs (IP address, browser user agent, pages and API endpoints requested, timestamps) and error reports, used to keep the service running and secure. Your IP address is also used at the edge to determine your approximate country so we can enforce the U.S.-only beta; the country itself is not stored on your account.
Cookies and Tracking
We use only cookies that are strictly necessary to run the service: a session cookie that keeps you signed in, and a short-lived cookie that carries an invitation code through sign-up. Your theme preference (light/dark) is kept in your browser's local storage. We do not use advertising cookies, third-party analytics, tracking pixels, or cross-site tracking of any kind, and we do not sell or share personal information for advertising.
How We Use It
- To operate the service: plan, write, review, and package your books.
- To send you sign-in links and notifications about your runs.
- To show you spend and enforce the cost limits you set.
- To secure the service, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms.
- To comply with legal obligations.
Who Processes It (Subprocessors)
We use a small number of infrastructure and AI providers to run Nightpress. Each processes data only as needed to provide its service to us, under its own terms:
| Provider | Role | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | AI text generation (planning, writing, review) | Your story inputs and manuscript content, sent to generate text |
| OpenAI | Cover image generation; text generation only for a book an administrator routes to an OpenAI model (no public tier runs on OpenAI) | Cover prompts derived from your book; your story inputs and manuscript content only when a book is routed to an OpenAI model |
| Vercel | Web hosting for the site and app | Request logs (IP address, user agent, pages requested) |
| Render | Backend API, pipeline workers, and Postgres database | Account records, book metadata, usage records, encrypted API keys |
| Cloudflare | DNS, edge network, and R2 object storage | Request logs at the edge; book files (chapters, manuscripts, covers, exports) |
| Resend | Transactional email (sign-in links, notifications) | Your email address and the message content |
| Sentry | Error tracking | Technical error reports, which may include request metadata and your account ID |
Your book content is sent to Anthropic's API to generate text — on your own key if you've added one, otherwise on our platform key under your beta allowance. Either way, that processing is governed by Anthropic's own commercial terms and privacy practices. The same applies to OpenAI for cover art and Budget-tier runs.
What We Don't Do
- We do not sell your data. Ever.
- We do not use your books or story inputs to train AI models.
- We do not share your content with other users unless you create a share link. A shared book is visible to anyone who has the link until you turn the link off.
- We do not run advertising or share data with advertisers.
Where It Lives and Retention
Structured data (accounts, projects, usage records, encrypted keys) is stored in a Postgres database. Book files (chapters, manuscripts, covers, exports) are stored in S3-compatible object storage. Both are hosted in the United States.
Deleted projects are soft-deleted — hidden from your account but retained until account deletion, so accidental deletions can be recovered by support. Technical logs and error reports are retained for a limited period by the providers listed above (typically days to a few weeks) and then discarded.
Deleting your account (Settings → Danger Zone) permanently purges everything: your account record, all books and their files, usage records, acceptance records, and encrypted API keys. This is immediate and cannot be undone. Residual copies in provider logs and backups age out on their normal schedule.
Your Choices
You can view and export your books at any time, remove your API key, and delete your account from Settings. If you have a question about the data we hold about you, or want a copy or correction of it, email us and we will respond within a reasonable time — we honor reasonable access, correction, and deletion requests regardless of where you live.
Changes
We may update this policy as the service evolves. Material changes will be announced in the app; the date at the top always reflects the current version.
